Tribute to the 60s with comedy, suspense, and even terror.
This could finally be the year. Amongst other things, what was holding this up for so long was that Warner Brothers owned the character of Batman, while 20th Century Fox owned the series. The success of the 1960s “Batman” can be summed up rather easily. What made this show so successful (at least for the first 2 seasons) was that we had Batman and his stodgy (but in a funny way) to provide a heroic character as well as consistency. And yet we could allow the villains to entertain us. The villains were often very, very bad. But they carried a charm that made them more likable than repulsive. And in some cases (such as the professor who banged his head and turned into the villain King Tut), they could be sympathetic as well. Some of the episodes were hilarious, such as when the Penguin ran for mayor, but there were also some realistic commentaries on political campaigns. The Penguin was a known criminal, but many people attended his campaign because he knew the tricks. And the heroic (and just a little too honest Batman) had less than a dozen people at his campaign, and they were falling asleep.Yet some episodes were on the frightening side. In “The Joker Is Wild,” the Joker finally had it with being beaten, and made his own utility belt. He fought surprisingly well in that episode, and he unleashed a wave of terror on Gotham. He even came really close to unmasking Batman and Robin. It’s probably also worth mentioning that the heroic Batman occasionally came up against a villain where he was reluctant to fight full force. A good example is when he came across Ma Parker. He was hesitant to use all his strength against a woman who was a criminal to be sure, but she seemed really motherly towards her children.Adam West really loved the 1st season. He kind of liked the 2nd season. And he felt the show was already on its way out early in the 3rd season. This is also a great tribute to the 60s. You will also see a slew of famous actors who made guest appearances as villains or just appeared in brief cameos.Let’s hope that 2014 is the year where we will see this on DVD.

YESSSSSS! Finally!
After years of waiting Batman 1966 Series is finally going to get a DVD release! Now I see two listings for the series. One for DVD and one for Blu Ray. I’m guessing it’s going to get a Blu Ray release? I hope so! I really do! And since the movie was put onto Blu Ray from Fox, there’s no reason why we can’t get a Bu Ray release. It seems back in January there was news about the series finally getting a release. I didn’t know about it till now when I saw a article from the Tvshowsondvd website. As of right now I’m not trusting this news until I see a actual update from Warner Bros. I’m just annoyed it took this long to finally see this series get a release. Why? Because of the battle between Fox and Warner Bros. This is Warner Bros doing. We would of seen a release a long time ago for the series but Warner Bros wanted the rights to the series even though Fox owned it. They think that because they own all of the other Batman movies, shows and cartoons that they should have the 1966 series as well. It’s insane because Fox made the series! They should of been the one to put it out not Warner Bros. It’s frustrating and a lot of fans were mad about this whole thing. Well since Warner wanted it so badly, they better put out a awesome box set for this. My review will be updated once I get the series.

The Batmania that started it all
BATMAN was a comic book-animated series that ran on ABC from 1966-68 regarding a wealthy entrepreneur Bruce Wayne(Adam West) and his ward Dick Grayson(Burt Ward) lead a double life: they are actually the crime fighting duo Batman and Robin. A secret Batpole in the Wayne mansion leads to the Batcave, where Police Commissioner Gordon(Neil Hamilton) along with police Chief O’Hara(Stafford Repp)often calls the Bat-duo on the Batphone with the latest emergency threatening Gotham City.Racing to the scene of the crime in the Batmobile, Batman and Robin must (with the help of the trusty Bat-utility-belt) thwart the efforts of a variety of master criminals, including The Riddler(Frank Gorshin), The Joker(Cesar Romero), Catwoman(Julie Newmar), and The Penguin(Burgess Meredith).BATMAN also had a lot of other interesting guest stars for villains like*David Wayne as the Madhatter*Roddy McDowall as the Bookworm*Art Carney as the Archer*Van Johnson as the Minstrel*Vincent Price as Egghead*Liberace as Chandelle*Carolyn Jones as Marsha*Cliff Robertson as Shame*Milton Berle as Louie the Lilac*Rudy Vallee as Lord Marmaduke FoggUnfortunately, by BATMAN’s 3rd Season, the ratings were falling significantly and the future of the series seemed uncertain, despite the 1967-68 Season being the season when Yvonne Craig joined the cast & crew as Batgirl whom also lived a double-life as Comm. Gordon’s mild-mannered librarian daughter(Barbara Gordon)at the Gotham Library since the producers wanted to keep up with the comic book, by adding Batgirl to the series. The short was convincing enough for ABC executives to pick up BATMAN for another season, and for producer Bill Dozier to introduce Batgirl as a regular on the show in an attempt to attract more female viewers by adding Batgirl to the picture joining the dynamic duo’s combat in crime, but unfortunately BATMAN was cancelled in the Spring of 1968.The show was reduced to once a week, with mostly self-contained episodes, although the following week’s villain would be in a tag at the end of the episode, similar to a soap opera.Accordingly, the narrator’s cliffhanger phrases were eliminated, with most of the episodes ending with him saying something to encourage viewers to watch the next episode. It would be so cool if BATMAN was released on DVD so we can watch all the episodes complete & uncut like they were originally shown on ABC as opposed to having to watch them with a lot of deleted scenes & commercial disruptions on ME TV, TV Land, FX, and the Family Channel.

KK, so at long last we can buy the original 1966 TV series of Batman on DVD. Yay!First things first; lots of people complaining about the lack of UV copy within this pack. I didn’t even notice that it was advertised as UV when I ordered it, and I wouldn’t have known what UV meant. I now know it refers to a downloadable digital copy of the programmes. So I wasn’t disappointed all when I see that it doesn’t actually come with a digital copy. In fact my box set mentioned nothing about a digital/UV copy. I see that the picture of the box on this website states it contains such copies but my box just says “Blu-Ray”.The picture on this site also seems to suggest that there is not only a Adam West scrap book, but another like book with Robin on the cover too. I didn’t get a book with Robin on the front but I did get an episode guide; perhaps the “Robin book” is the episode guide just with a different picture on it.Anyway, the box is nicely made and contain 3 gated sleeves with the three series contain therein; Season 1 has 3 disks, Season 2 has 6 disks, and Season 3 has 3 disks, plus 1 “extras” disk. 120 episodes in all.The picture quality, considering the age of the original material is vary good, though playing it on PS4 there black borders on the sides of the screen, but this is just probably a setting in my PS4 settings that I can change to deal with this, so it’s no great deal. There is also a little box of 44 cards in this box set, about playing card size, with hand drawn pictures of Batman & Robin in action. Finally there is the little miniature Batmobile, which I’ll keep in the box as it doesn’t really appeal to me.So, I am vary happy with this box set, particularly as I wasn’t after the UV copies anyway.I loved the outrageousness of it all; the campness, Robin’s ability to quickly solve the most ridiculous riddles, Batman’s utility belt that held a hug array of objects, the sloping villan dens, the cliffhangers at the end of every other episode that usually saw Batman & Robin tied to some weird machine and about to face death, the bat rope climbing with strings holding back the capes being visible. The list goes on. It was just great.Oh and apparently these box sets are a limited 95000 sets. I have number 41975 >.

What the Butler Saw –
Kapow! Sock! Biff! Wham!Batman didn’t have a time machine in the Bat-Cave, but this is your chance to roll back the years and revisit your 1960s childhood, leave behind the 21st century and just wallow in the nostalgia of much nicer times.Commissioner Gordon and Chief O’Hara, perpetually perplexed by the dastardly deeds of the various villains, inevitably have to lift the glass cheese-dome and reach for the bat-phone.The guest villains (including Burgess Meredith (The Penguin), Frank Gorshin (The Riddler) and Cesar Romero (The Joker), to name but a few) are obviously having a great time hamming it up for the camera. And I love the labels on all the equipment around the Bat-Cave (just in case the Dynamic Duo forget what something is!), a homage to the original comic strip. The ‘Giant Lighted Lucite Map of Gotham City’ springs to mind. Interaction with the Bat-Computer involves Hollerith Punched Cards!Of course, no attempt is made to hide the fact that their vertical wall climbs are in fact them walking across the floor with the camera tilted through 90 degrees. Indeed a virtue is made of it.OK, so it’s all very camp and comical, in contrast to the latter, much darker, incarnations, but that’s exactly how it’s meant to be and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m sure there’s room for many different interpretations of the genre along the Batman spectrum.Batman and The Boy Wonder are just so earnest and law-abiding (in hot pursuit of the latest villain, Batman is hesitant to park the Batmobile in a No-Parking zone!). And of course the guest villains are all great. The Blu-ray picture is crystal clear (much sharper than it would have been on a 1960s TV!) and of course ‘In Color’ unlike it would have been seen on a British black and white TV of the time.Pedant’s Corner: On page 3 of the accompanying Adam West Scrapbook, ‘Washington’ has been miss-spelt as ‘Washingtion’ (with an i between the t & o).A piece of trivia. Alan Napier (Alfred) was a cousin of British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain! The familiar Nana nana them tune can be played by pressing the ‘PRESS HERE!’ button on the side of the blu-ray box and there is a nice, if small, Hot-Wheels model of the 1960s Batmobile from the series. Incidentally, the original batmobile from the series was designed and built by renowned Hollywood custom-car maker George Barris, based on a 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car from Ford.I know what you’re thinking. It’s a bit pricy. But here you have all 120 episodes, plus some nice extras, on 13 pristine Blu-ray discs. There is much to relish here. Just enjoy.

I originaly gave this product one star a couple of months back, only because I thought the set had been shelved. However, I promised to delete the review and write another as soon as It was released. So here it is.I know some people are complaining about the ultraviolet editions not being included, despite Amazon advertising that it was. That was bad, and I feel for those who really wanted to watch it on their iPads/Tablets etc. However, I am not bothered about it. I hardly ever watch anything on my Tablet or phone. I like sitting in front of the TV.The box itself is really nice, and the extras are OK. The Batmobile is nothing like the original Toy I had as a Kid in the early 70’s. (That used to fire matchsticks out of the rocket launchers) It is considerably smaller and has no movable parts. However, it’s OK. The Bubble Gum Cards are also just a novelty. Nothing great. The best thing is the Episode Guide. That is pretty good. However, it doesn’t show original Transmission dates. The Box also has a ‘Press Here’ button on the side that plays a part of the theme tune. That’s a nice touch. (Until the battery eventually dies.)However, the episodes themselves are very good. Not ‘Like they were made yesterday’ as some people have claimed, as there is some grain on some scenes. (Not many) However, generally the prints are very nice and pristine. All the episodes are also in their entirety. By that I mean they each have the full Beginnings with the theme tune and cartoonish opening, and full credits at the end. The cliff hangers are also left intact. (Unlike ‘Time Tunnel’)All in all, this is a Fantastic Box Set and well presented with very good prints of all episodes. This has never before been released in any format (Video, DVD, or Bluray) and has been patiently awaited by fans for decades. It is only a limited edition, so when it’s gone it’s gone. They could re-release it in a standard box set next year, in a few years time, or maybe never. Who knows? Are you prepared to take the risk? So, if you want it get it now! Before its deleted and goes for mega bucks on eBay.
