Slightly differs from O’Cedar mop heads. Durability is questionable. Still a great bargain.
I bought a 3-pack of the regular spin mop heads (the ones with the fluffy white strings) to use with my O’Cedar EasyWring Spin Mop set.Luckily, I still had a brand new O’Cedar mop head to compare these generic ones against. There are some small differences, which make these mop heads both slightly superior & slightly inferior to the original. Even though the differences are slight, they may be important enough for those with special flooring or those who want their mop to excel at a specific task.I’ll cover all the differences I’ve noticed below & point out a “defect” I’ve been experiencing with all 3 of the mop heads I received. Generally, though, I think these mop heads are a great bargain given the low price & overall good performance. (Even though these don’t perform as well as the orginal O’Cedar mop head in certain ways, I’d still give them a “good” performance rating for a classic string-style spin mop. Most people probably wouldn’t mind – or even notice – the small differences.)• HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I USED THIS PRODUCT & HOW? So far, I’ve only used each mop head 2-3 times. However, I tackled at least 600 sq ft of flooring during each use; then used the same mop head to keep up with muddy/wet foot & paw prints the rest of the day. I also used one of the mop heads to clean up several gallons of waste water from a plumbing incident. I’ve handwashed each mop head at least once and ran all three thru a cycle in my front load washer machine. I’ve only ever air dried them.• FIT/COMPATIBILITY: The mop heads fit the O’Cedar EasyWring Spin Mop handle very well. No issues with them popping off during use. They seem to fit more firmly than the O’Cedar mop heads, so they require a bit more force to take them off. (This only bothered me when I was dealing with the mop head I used to clean up the waste water.)• ABSORBENCY: These mop heads excel at soaking up liquid compared to the O’Cedar mop head. The strings are thicker & the mop head looks to be more dense overall. I chose this mop head to tackle the plumbing leakage for a reason. Cleaning up all that water was a lot quicker than I anticipated.• DOES IT DO A GOOD JOB OF CLEANING? The O’Cedar head is slightly better at tougher, stuck on stains & grime. But that doesn’t mean these mop heads are bad. They just take a few more passes to fully remove some things (like a sticky spot behind my trash can where a bit of juice was spilled and dirt & debris had collected onto it). These mop heads outperform the original when it comes to general dirt & grime (the kind of stuff that can be easily wiped away with a damp/wet sponge, like all the fine dirt, dust, & dirt stains that a broom or vacuum can’t remove).• DO THESE SCRATCH UP THE FLOOR OR HAVE ISSUES, SUCH AS THE MOP STRINGS GETTING CAUGHT UNDER THE FRAME? Nope! Those are problems I tend to have with the original O’Cedar mop head on certain flooring. Since these are so plush, even the center of the mop (directly under the frame/attachment area) seems to be equally effective at cleaning as all the loose strings on the outside of the frame. (Check out the photo I posted to see the difference between the mop heads.) I have not accidentally scraped any part of the plastic frame against the floor yet.• SPIN BUCKET FUNCTION: Works fine. Since the mop heads are thicker than the original, they fill up every centimeter of the wringer basket. But it will spin like normal. You do have to be careful not to step on the spin pedal all crazy when wringing out a mop that’s soaked to max capacity with dirty water. Otherwise you may experience some flying droplets. It’s nothing crazy, but there is a risk of those filthy droplets spraying on your walls, floor, leg, or surrounding items. After you initially push or spin some of the water out, there isn’t much risk of sprinkling dirty water outside the bucket.• DOES IT WRING OUT WELL? It wrings out “pretty good.” Definitely good enough for linoleum & other truly waterproof flooring. The O’Cedar mop head wrings out better. I suppose this is the trade off for having the thicker, denser, super absorbent strings. These mop heads are excellent for soaking up spills or really wetting/lathering down a surface. But they still hold onto a significant amount of water no matter how long you try to wring them out using the EasyWring bucket system. They’ll wring out enough that you can carry the mop around & not experience dripping. But it’s still holding in a lot of liquid. Once you plop it on the floor & move it around, you’ll notice that it leaves a decent wet streak behind. (No puddles, but enough moisture to take most surfaces about 10-15 minutes to fully dry.) This can be a good or bad thing. It’s great for cleaning my bathroom & laundry room floors (even my shower walls), but not so great in areas where I have laminate floors. I had to remind my family members when I mopped the tile flooring in one of our bathrooms bc the surface was slippery & took almost 10 minutes longer to dry than normal. I had to soak up the excess water left behind on my laminate flooring using a dry flat mop & a washcloth attached to a Swiffer stick after using these mop heads to deep clean. (My laminate floors are old; therefore, more prone to warping from moisture than usual.) I also took precautions to dry my vinyl flooring bc I wasn’t comfortable with the amount of water left on the surface. The O’Cedar mop head will leave wet streaks on my laminate & viny flooring, but not so much that I feel I need to soak some of the moisture up with a dry mop.• DURABILITY: I question how durable these mop heads are, but I’ll need more time & use to be certain. I don’t think they’re going to last as long as the O’Cedar mop heads. The strings on the O’Cedar mop heads look to be more tightly woven… meaning, the long microfibers are more carefully binded together. The tips of the strings don’t splay out as much as they do on these mop heads. The fibers don’t seem as prone to catching on things. For example, I have a metal floor divider in a doorway between two rooms. I’ve used the O’Cedar mop head on it many times, and I’ve even focused the mop on cleaning all the grime that had built up around that metal strip. I never had issues with the O’Cedar mop head. But when I made a few passes over the strip with one of these mop heads, the strings kept catching on a corner of the metal strip where there’s a very tiny crevice. One of the mop strings ended up snagging into a weird fluffed out shape, so I had to cut the piece off. And then there’s the “defect” I’ve noticed on all 3 mop heads…• WHAT IS THE DEFECT I’VE BEEN NOTICING? “Extra long strings.” (That’s what I’m calling it for now anyway.) I haven’t been able to tell if the mop heads just had a few incorrectly sized strings woven into the frame or if the extra long strings are actually strings that are coming loose & are about to fall out. I inspected all of the mop heads as soon as I opened the packaging. 2 out of 3 had a couple of extra long mop strings. I gave them a fair tug, and they didn’t budge. (I didn’t pull too hard because I figured mop strings wouldn’t be subjected to that kind of force under typical circumstances. And pulling with excessive force could cause me to damage the mop head when it was indeed just a really long string.) Since the strings seemed to be secure, I just trimmed them down. But then 2 of the mop heads “developed” more long strings after I first used them. I tugged again & they seemed secured. I figured I must have missed them when I first inspected everything. But then I found another extra long string after I washed all 3 mop heads in the washer machine. So far, no strings have completely fallen out. So, in fairness, I’m going to assume they’re secure and maybe I just overlooked a lot of them during my first inspection & mopping sessions. Maybe they were just tangled up in all the other plush strings. But if even one string falls out within the next 10 uses or 5 machine washings, I’m going to assume it’s a more serious defect. (And then I’ll update this review.)For now, I’m rating these a 4/5. I deducted a star bc of how much water these mop heads leave behind compared to the more expensive O’Cedar replacements and bc of the slightly inferior & still questionable durability. I still believe it’s a good bargain, and these really are excellent to have on hand should you ever have a massive spill/leak to soak up.
